Corning Officially Introduces Gorilla Glass 4

Corning Gorilla Glass 4Corning has unveiled its next generation of protective layer for mobile devices. The Gorilla Glass 4 is believed to be twice stronger compared to the Gorilla Glass 3. It means future smartphone models will have better ability to resist cracks and breaks when accidentally dropped or bumped.

To simulate contact with rough surface, Corning used 180-frit sandpaper and dropped from a height of nearly 3.5 feet. Based on this test, devices protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 4 were able to resist breaking 80 percent of the time. A senior executive from the company said that sapphire glass have excellent ability to resist scratches, but it still doesn’t match the Gorilla Glass series in terms of durability.

Sapphire is the hardest material available on Earth, after diamonds. Apple was expected to produce a large number of sapphire displays for its next generation smartphone model, the iPhone 6. However, issues in the finishing process resulted in poor yields of the component. As a result, the company decided to skip the use of the component for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. So for all of the butterfingers in the world, they could feel a bit easier because Corning will soon release its stronger solution in the market.
